Losing My Faith
For most of my life, I held dear the Christian faith. I grew up in a small town where belief in God was ubiquitous, woven into every conversation, every framework of moral thinking. My daily roster of activities even included morning prayers and turns of duty at Sunday school. Back then, I would have scoffed at anyone who questioned the existence of God.
But things began to change when I started studying philosophy and science at university. The evidence that undergirded my faith felt thinner the more I learned. The arguments I used to rehash—that morality required God, or that the universe was too complex to exist without a designer—started to sand off under the pressure of reason and evidence. I realized that my beliefs weren’t embedded in truth, but rather in tradition and fear.
At first, the transition was terrifying. Leaving behind what had once ensconced my identity felt like stepping into peril. Friends warned me that I was walking toward emptiness, that without God, life would be meaningless. But I discovered the opposite. There was a kind of liberation in admitting uncertainty, in accepting that we don’t have all the answers.
Now, when I look back, I see how religion can hinder genuine progress. It hotly resists new ideas, even when those ideas could relieve suffering. It teaches people to value obedience over curiosity. And perhaps worst of all, it divides—creating “us versus them” boundaries that have justified violence for centuries.
So, yes, I’ve lost my faith. But I’ve also gained something far greater: the courage to leap into the unknown, guided not by dogma, but by the endless pursuit of truth. For that, I owe no kudos to religion—but plenty to reason and compassion.
