Olá Thays! Geralmente esse erro acontece quando você cria um repositório de desenvolvimento, um repositório comum, usando o comando git init na pasta do seu projeto, no caso um repositório que tem uma cópia dos arquivos e deseja fazer um push para esse repositório. Nesse caso você deve iniciar o repositório servidor com a opção --bare, para isso você deve inicializar o repositório da seguinte forma:

git init --bare
