Erro ao tentar conectar com o banco de dados | Java e JPA: Otimizações com JPA2 e Hibernate

Quando o tomcat inicia, a aplicação não consegue se conectar com o banco de dados:

Na classe JpaConfigurator está assim:

  dataSource.setDriverClassName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
        dataSource.setUrl("jdbc:mysql://localhost/projeto_jpa");
        dataSource.setUsername("root");
        dataSource.setPassword("root");

Estou conseguindo pelo console conectar normalmente com esse usuário e senha e quando dou um 'show databases;', o banco 'projeto_jpa' é listado.
