BUILD FAILURE

Referente ao curso Maven: Build do zero a web, no capítulo Do zero aos relatórios e atividade Um gostinho do Maven

Ao executar o comando mvn compile era apresentado o erro:

Seguindo instruções em tópicos anteriores, adicionei no arquivo pom.xml o seguinte código: 

<properties>
    <maven.compiler.source>1.6</maven.compiler.source>
    <maven.compiler.target>1.6</maven.compiler.target>
  </properties>

Mas, não funcionou... 

[ERROR] Source option 6 is no longer supported. Use 7 or later.
[ERROR] Target option 6 is no longer supported. Use 7 or later.

Nas informações de erro... reportava que a versão 1.6 não era suportada, com isso coloquei 1.7: 

<properties>
    <maven.compiler.source>1.7</maven.compiler.source>
    <maven.compiler.target>1.7</maven.compiler.target>
  </properties>

E compilou com sucesso.

Eu acredito que este curso precisa ser urgentemente atualizado, se possível com o professor Nico.
